Silver Oak Academy’s Type I and Type III nonpublic schools provide year-round educational, vocational, and daily living experiences designed to meet youth where they are and help them realize their full potential.
SOA’s Type I operates as a Full Day Special Education Program serving students who typically qualify for special education services under the categories of:
SOA’s Type III operates as a Continuation of Public School Program providing short-term transitional instruction to students residing at Silver Oak Academy – Residential, who have been assessed as needing this level of intervention. This program ensures students stay on track academically while building confidence for a smooth transition back into a local school.

Our schools have been developed to maximize teaching English, language arts, social studies, math and sciences in a manner consistent with each student’s ability. Credits earned meet the Maryland State Department of Education’s requirements and will be transferred to the student’s LEA for graduation and issuance of a diploma.
Our multidisciplinary school team includes clinicians, behavior specialists, and special educators in consultation with parents and families. Additionally, the school programs are supported by a registrar, nurse and administrative personnel.
Students can be referred to SOA Nonpublic Special Education Program by their local school system’s special education placement office when emotional and/or behavioral problems are preventing academic progress in the regular academic settings. If the student is in need of a high level of structure and intensive support services, a referral to SOA is appropriate.
Silver Oak Academy provides education year-round. Students are required to attend school both during the regular school year (September to June) and during the summer months (July to August). Although the school operates every month of the year, students enjoy regular vacation periods.
